REGION
Metropolitan Council – The Met Council coordinates economic development, community planning and service provision for the seven-county Twin Cities region.
Metropolitan Airports Commission – The Metropolitan Airports Commission was created by state law in 1943. A public corporation, the commission provides for coordinated aviation services throughout the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The MAC operates the third largest aviation system in the nation, consisting of Minneapolis-St. Paul International and six reliever airports.
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport - The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) is not part of any one city, but is nestled among several. The airport is surrounded by Minneapolis, St. Paul and the suburban cities of Bloomington, Eagan, Mendota Heights and Richfield. MSP has one airfield with four runways and two terminal buildings – the Lindbergh Terminal and the Humphrey Terminal -each with adjoining parking ramp facilities. In 2008, MSP served 34 million passengers and accommodated 450,044 landings and takeoffs. MSP ranks 16th in North America for the number of travelers served and has the 12th busiest airfield in the United States.
STATE
MN Department of Employment and Economic Development – DEED is the State of Minnesota’s economic development agency. It administers programs to promote business recruitment, expansion and retention. It also engages in workforce development, international trade and community development. The agency supports the economic success of individuals, businesses and communities by improving opportunity for growth. Below are a number of resources supported by DEED.

- Minnesota Job Skills Partnership - The Minnesota Jobs Skills Partnership (MJSP) Program strategically helps Minnesota businesses and schools competitively train the workforce.
- Minnesota Small Business Development Centers – SBDCs provide business consulting services at no charge to small business owners and entrepreneurs. Minnesota SBDCs are located at the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), the SBA, the University of St. Thomas, and St. Cloud State University.
- University of St. Thomas – The University of St. Thomas’ SBDC has provided no-cost consulting to more than 10,000 small businesses and entrepreneurs in the Twin Cities area since 1981. It helps business owners develop strategies, attract customers, increase sales and improve profitability. Consultants have extensive, practical experience in marketing, finance, accounting, operations and/or business planning. Most have advanced degrees and have been business owners.
- Minnesota Workforce Center System – Minnesota WorkForce Centers (WFCs) provide the tools, resources and services needed for job search, career planning and training needs. WorkForce Centers are a collaboration of partners, including the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) and local community agencies. People seeking work, businesses seeking employees, students, and those looking for a first job or returning to the workforce, will find services to meet their needs, offered at no cost.
MN Department of Commerce - Responsibilities include ensuring equitable commercial and financial transactions and reliable utility services by: regulating and licensing business activity in more than 20 industries; investigating and resolving consumer complaints; advocating the public’s interest before the Public Utilities Commission.
MN Department of Labor and Industry – This Department ensures that Minnesota’s work and living environments are equitable, healthy and safe. It oversees construction codes and licensing, labor standards, workers’ compensation, OHSA, apprenticeship training programs, and labor-related policy development, research and statistics.
MN Pollution Control Agency - Protects the environment through assistance, training, permitting, compliance and outreach programs.
Minnesota Trade Office – The Minnesota Trade Office (MTO) promotes and assists in the expansion of exports and foreign direct investments that contribute to the growth of the Minnesota economy.
FEDERAL
Business.gov – Business.gov is a national clearinghouse for small business resources. It helps users find grants and loans, choose a business name, access tax information, get started in government contracting, hire a new employee and more.
Small Business Administration - The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) was created in 1953 as an independent agency of the federal government to aid, counsel, assist and protect the interests of small business concerns, to preserve free competitive enterprise and to maintain and strengthen the overall economy of our nation.
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
USDA Rural Development of Minnesota - USDA Rural Development’s mission is to increase economic opportunity and improve the quality of life for rural residents. Rural Development fosters growth in homeownership, finances business development and supports the creation of critical community and technology infrastructure.
NONPROFIT
Economic Development Association of Minnesota - EDAM is a nonprofit professional association of individuals and organizations throughout the state of Minnesota dedicated to the advancement of the economic development profession.
Enterprise Minnesota – MTI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening Minnesota’s manufacturing and related industries. Its business consultants work closely with companies to improve their efficiencies and output, contain their costs, and achieve real growth in sales, revenue, and earnings. They help clients identify and employ business solutions in growth services, operational efficiencies, applied technologies, supply chain management, and workforce development.
Minnesota Business Finance Corporation - Minnesota Business Finance Corporation (MBFC) is a private not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) organization licensed by the U.S. Small Business Administration as a Certified Development Company (CDC). MBFC originates SBA 504 loans for small businesses across Minnesota.
Minnesota Chamber of Commerce - The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce is the state’s largest and premier business advocacy organization. As the statewide voice of business, the Chamber represents more than 2,400 businesses of all types and sizes across Minnesota.
SCORE – Service Core of Retired Executives – The Service Corps of Retired Executives is a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to the formation, growth and success of small businesses. Its volunteer counselors are working or retired business owners, executives and corporate leaders. They provide free and confidential advice to entrepreneurs and small business owners in every industry. SCORE has branch offices in Minneapolis, St. Louis Park, Saint Paul and Burnsville.
WomenVenture – WomenVenture provides the technical tools and emotional support to help Minnesotans start and grow a business, find a new job, or develop a new career path. It serves women and men of all economic and ethnic backgrounds. It provides career planning, small business development assistance and loans, training in financial literacy, and GirlVenture training to help girls become healthy adults.
